In Ephesians 5:18 God commands that we never be drunk with wine or any other substance. Excessive consumption of any substance allows it to control us and lead us into a life wasted on foolish choices and actions.
Instead of allowing alcohol, drugs, food, or any other earthly entity control us. God wants each of us to be filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit. The words "be filled" can be translated "be continuously filled" or "allow yourself to be filled continually". God wants us to surrender, to yield to the Holy Spirit's control each moment of the day.
Colossians 3:16 ... "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
When we think of worship as surrender, we see that yielding all to the filling or control of the Holy Spirit is worship to God. In this yielding, God desires that we experience His joyous Presence as He guides and guards us in all that we do. It's His will that we walk wisely, avoid evil, and make the most of our time.
Ephesians 5:15-17 ... "See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Do not be unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is."
